Find out who took home the awards at the annual club Captain's Table - features an interview with the club's player of the year!
We caught up with this year's Gordon Morris player of the year, Sam Jewiss, after his excellent performances left him as leading wicket-taker in Division 1 this season with 40 wickets. See his thoughts on the 2017 season, his plan for success and pride of receiving the accolades below...
How much did you enjoy playing in the side this season?
We always have good fun on and off the field which makes this such a good club to play for. After a disappointing 2016, it was important we kept our team spirits up and didn't lose that aspect of our game.
We managed to do that and we picked up some good wins along the way so overall I think it was a decent season for us and enjoyable to be a part of.
What were your aims for the season personally and for the team?
After being relegated in 2016 the aim for the team this season was simply to bounce straight back and gain promotion. This wasn't to be but we were in contention for most of the year and have a good platform to build on.
Personally, I was keen to bounce back after a poor previous season and set myself a target of taking 35 wickets (1 more than my previous best) at an economy rate of 3.5 per over. I achieved my wickets target but was a bit over on economy (3.8)! One to work on for next year....
What was the key to your success?
The plans depended on the conditions to a large extent. If the ball was moving, I could afford to get it slightly fuller and make the batsman play. Sooner or later mistakes will happen or if I was lucky, one would nip back and break through the defences.
If conditions were flat, the plan was even simpler. Bowl a terrible couple of overs so I get taken out the attack, let the spinners do the hard work and use my remaining overs to get out some tail enders!
What does it mean to receive the Gordon Morris award and to be the league’s top wicket taker?
Winning the Gordon Morris award is a great honour for me. I debuted for the 1st team in 2006 and have seen a lot of great players for the club win the award! It's nice to get my name on the trophy alongside them.
Winning the league award for top wicket taker is definitely a bonus from this season and a good award to win. A lot of credit goes to the rest of the team for creating the right conditions for me to take the wickets as a lot of them came in the closing stages of the innings.
What are your aims for next year?
The aim for next year remains the same, to gain promotion back to the premier league. I think we are in a good position to push forward as a club and look forward to pursuing this. Personally I would like to keep improving so would set my sites on a similar wicket haul to this season but with a better economy rate. For the team to progress we all need to look to improve on our personal achievements from the previous year.
