RIP Graham Tappin

It is with deep sadness to report that we have received news from Christchurch that Graham Tappin recently passed away not far short of his ninety-first birthday.

Graham was an exceptional sportsman and an accomplished coach excelling at both football (semi-professional) and cricket.  Supremely fit throughout his life Graham completed two London marathons with his close friend Peter Hughes in very good times at an age when most people were contemplating retirement.

Graham first played for Dartford Cricket Club shortly after the end of the Second World War.  A regular first team player Graham could bat anywhere in the top seven; bowled decent middle pace swing; he had buckets for hands and could also keep wicket very tidily when called upon.

During the 1980,s Graham was captain of the Sunday Ist XI “invincibles” in the days when every Sunday was played all-day with matches starting at 11.30am.  That side went unbeaten for nearly three years although I, for one, remember the time when Graham was quite upset when the side lost at Ilford following a very generous (and rare) declaration by Graham!

Once Graham finally hung up his cricketing boots (well into his seventies) he continued to support the Club by umpiring for both the 3rd and 4th XI’s before he emigrated to New Zealand to be close to his daughter Claire and her family.  It is very pleasing to reflect that Graham was able to enjoy a very comfortable and thoroughly rewarding time in New Zealand and that his close family was with him at the end.

A celebration of life will be held for Graham on Saturday 21st December 2024, 12pm – 4pm. Light refreshments will be provided so please confirm attendance to Neil Wilson via n.wilson1@sky.com.

In the meantime please join with me in sending our condolences to Claire, Ian and the wider family.
