Club history: Llewellyn Micah's tankard

Details about an exciting piece of historic club memorabilia that has recently come to light.

We were recently contacted by Richard Clegg who has been researching his wife's family history and has come across an exciting piece of memorabilia relating to the Club that dates all the way back to 1936.

On the off chance that someone may have some more information they could provide Richard with, here are details all about this exciting piece of history!

Llewellyn Fowell Micah, more commonly known as Llew Micah, was born in 1852 and married Nellie Winifred Bolt in 1915. Micah was a costumers milliner who had parents from Rhayader, Wales. It is believed he grew up in 58 Hythe Street, Dartford.

The Micah family were related to the Hollands family, more specifically Thomas Hollands (b.1913, d. 1980) who is Richard’s late father-in-law. The Hollands family had links to Shorne and lived on Queens Farm and Green Farm in that area.

A tankard was presented to Llew Micah in 1936 by Dartford Cricket Club – unfortunately Richard knows very little about the tankard and what Llew Micah’s involvement with the club was.

The tankard is engraved with the following:

Llew Micah tankard 2              Llew Micah tankard

Presented to

LLEW F. MICAH

by

The Dartford Cricket Club

As a token of their esteem and gratitude

For services rendered to the Club

Over a period of 30 years

1936

After Micah’s passing in 1943 the tankard was left for Thomas Hollands, the late father of Richard’s wife. More recently after the passing of Mr Hollands the tankard was recovered by Richard and his family and they would love to know more about Micah’s involvement with the Club.

If anyone would happen to know anything about Micah, Hollands or the tankard itself we'd love to put you in contact with Richard and his family.

UPDATE:

Jim Fish has sent in the following:

According to “Dartford Historical Notes”  published 1933, Llew Micah attended a Dinner following the opening of Hesketh Park Cricket Ground in 1905.

He was a member of the Committee of the Dartford Club and Ground who were then going to run the new Cricket Club.

In 1930 he batted at number 3 for Dartford versus United Berlin Cricket Club at Hesketh Park, not bad for a 78 year old and scored 12

At the time of being presented with the Tankard in 1936, he would have been 84 and 91 when he died in 1943.

The book is available at the Dartford Library and it also shows a picture of the Club members in 1930 including Llew Micah, plus a lot of the more recently deceased members.

It also makes mention of a David Micah, perhaps his son. If Llew was 78 in 1930 he must have played for the Club nearly as long as Graham Tappin.

Richard and his family would like to pass there sincere thanks onto Mr Fish for this information.
